HEALTH & ALTITUDE ADVISORY

Please travel mindfully, with care for both people and place. Visiting the Biennale sites is undertaken at your own risk, particularly given the high-altitude environment.

Acclimatisation is essential, not optional. Please spend at least 48 hours in Leh before travelling to higher elevations, and consult your doctor before your journey if you have any pre-existing or ongoing medical conditions.

  • Spend a minimum of 48 hours acclimatising in Leh before travelling to higher-altitude locations.

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity, trekking, cycling, running, or long hikes during your first two days

  • Recognise the symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), including headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue, breathlessness, or difficulty sleeping. If symptoms worsen, seek medical attention immediately.

  • Stay well hydrated by drinking 2–3 litres of water daily, and eat light, nourishing meals while acclimatising.

  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, recreational drugs, and sedative medications during the acclimatisation period, as they increase the risk of altitude-related illness.

  • If you have a pre-existing medical condition, consult your doctor before travelling. Take preventive medication such as Diamox only under medical advice.

  • Ascend gradually wherever possible. Do not visit high mountain passes or remote high-altitude destinations immediately after arriving in Leh.

  • Carry essential protection, including sunscreen, UV-protective sunglasses, warm clothing, a hat, prescribed medication, and a reusable water bottle.

  • Monitor weather conditions and always follow the advice of local authorities, accommodation providers, guides, and emergency personnel.

  • Your itinerary should never take priority over your health. If you feel unwell, stop, rest, and seek medical assistance before continuing your journey.
