DIFF On the Road at sā Ladakh Biennale extends the Dharamshala International Film Festival’s vision beyond its annual edition in Dharamshala, bringing independent Himalayan cinema into community spaces. Conceived as a travelling cinematic journey, the programme reinterprets traditional itinerant storytelling practices, in which cinema moves through high-altitude regions and becomes part of lived experience.

Featuring curated film packages by Himalayan filmmakers, the screenings foreground mountain ecologies, lived realities, and evolving identities shaped by terrain and altitude. Moving beyond static formats, the initiative creates a dynamic exchange, where screening, travel, and engagement become part of a larger narrative of cinema in motion.

Experience and Engagement

The programme unfolds across three locations in Ladakh, with screenings held in village settings, courtyards, open grounds, and natural landscapes. Each evening is designed as a shared cultural experience, including film screenings, moderated conversations, and informal gatherings over tea or meals.

Alongside two traditional screenings, one experimental format projects films onto natural surfaces such as rock faces, allowing cinema to merge with the landscape itself. These moments create temporary cultural commons, where audiences engage not just as viewers, but as participants in dialogue, reflection, and collective exchange.

Film Programme | 2023 - 2024

The film programme at sā Ladakh 2023 brought together a diverse selection of works engaging with landscape, ecology, memory, and lived realities across Ladakh and beyond. Featuring films by artists and filmmakers including Tenzing Jamphel & Omyer Lasso, Tsering Motup, Sharbendu De, Vibha Galhotra, Raki Nikahetiya, and Sonam Angchok, alongside a collaboration with the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF), the programme created a space for critical reflection and exchange. Traversing narratives of ritual, farming, identity, and environmental change, the screenings positioned moving image as a vital medium, bridging documentary and artistic inquiry while foregrounding stories rooted in the Himalayas.

In 2024, this engagement deepened through DIFF On the Road, extending the festival’s presence into Ladakh as a travelling cinema initiative. Coordinated by Ladakhi filmmaker Stenzin Tankong, the programme showcased works by Himalayan filmmakers including Tenzin Tsetan Choklay, Dechen Roder, Ritu Sarin & Tenzing Sonam, Rajan Kathet, Dishant Pradhan & Arunatpal Chanda, and Suraj Bhattarai. Presented within community settings, the screenings fostered transboundary dialogue—reflecting shared experiences, ecological concerns, and evolving identities across the Himalayan region, while creating spaces for collective viewing, conversation, and cultural exchange.
